Shipping of the Future
The Swedish Maritime Administration is actively working to develop the shipping of the future. The work takes place in both a national and international context with programs and projects in research and innovation.
Research and Innovation at Swedish Maritime Administration
By initiating and running a number of international projects, the Swedish Maritime Administration contributes to development and progress in the shipping industry and in its own organization. We contribute to increase the competitiveness of shipping by examining the possibilities thereof in the intermodal logistics chain. By conducting innovation and service development, the Swedish Maritime Administration takes concrete responsibility for the future of shipping, and ensures the efficiency of its own organization. An important component of this work is to contribute actively to the work with international standards and the development of a maritime digital infrastructure.
The Swedish Maritime Administration focuses its research and innovation work on the following general areas:

Research and Innovation collaboration
The Swedish Maritime Administration collaborates with the business community, academia, the shipping industry and other authorities both in Sweden and internationally. International regulations and the global character of shipping make collaboration outside Sweden and Europe's borders crucial for the future of shipping. Close cooperation within the EU also enables external funding from the EU's various funding programs for research and innovation.
Smart Port Calls
The Swedish Maritime Administration participates, together with the actors in the shipping industry in a joint program to create more efficient port calls through digitization. Together with Swedish Shipowners’ Association, Ports of Sweden, Swedish Shipbrokers' Association and Swedish Transport Agency, Swedish Maritime Administration contributes to stimulating projects that digitize and streamline the port call process.
Simulator Centre
The Swedish Maritime Administration’s simulator facility in Gothenburg, co-located with Chalmers' simulator facility, has been in operation since 2012. The simulator facility is a technology center that contributes to find tomorrow's solutions for shipping and maritime operations
Sea Traffic Management
Sea Traffic Management (STM) enables optimized port calls, real-time information sharing between ships and ports or land centers (for example, traffic coordination and rescue management). STM also contributes to an improved common situation awareness in shipping. New digitized services enables more port calls to be "just in time" and safer, more efficient and more environmentally friendly shipping.
More Projects for the Future
We conduct a wide range of projects in several areas; from equality within the shipping industry, to ice navigation research, search and rescue development and the future of pilotage, just to mention some topics.
REDO 2.0
Together with with partners the Swedish Maritime Administration contributes to creating knowledge and supporting the shipping companies' systematic work environment work through methods and tools that are adapted for onboard employees.
EfficientFlow
In STM EfficientFlow, the Baltic ports of Rauma and Gävle implement efficient port calls using real-time information. Improved traffic flow converts unsafe waiting times into bunker savings for large ships in the narrow Swedish and Finnish archipelagos.
STM BALT SAFE
The Baltic Sea Project STM BALT SAFE (2019-2021), will contribute to increased safety for shipping in the Baltic Sea through Sea Traffic Management (STM) -compatible shipping services and by digitizing the exchange of information between ships and vessel traffic centers.
Ranging Mode for the Baltic Sea
Ranging Mode (R-Mode) is a positioning system based on land stations, which could serve as back-up to satellite based system, like GPS..
