Film rental
For many, many years, the Swedish Seamen's Service (and its predecessors HKF and Handelsflottans Välfärdsråd) have provided the merchant fleet with feature films. Initially, this was done using 16mm film reels, before the VHS format took over in the 1980s. At the turn of the millennium, video cassettes were replaced by DVDs, and in more recent times, Blu-ray discs have also been included in the film packages. Now, that era is coming to an end.
Important information to the subscribers
We regret to inform you that the Swedish Maritime Administration’s rental film service will be discontinued as of 2025-06-30. Over the past few years, we have done our best to keep the service alive, understanding its importance to many of you.
Unfortunately, the subscriber group has now rapidly decreased below the minimum threshold. Combined with the uncertain future of disc-based films (with the proper rights), this has led us to the decision not to extend the agreement with our supplier.
With this announcement, we are terminating the agreement with you effective 2025-06-30. Films delivered onboard up until that date can be kept for 12 months from their delivery, as before, and must be destroyed after the rental period ends. You are also obligated to send a receipt confirming this has been done to sjomansmedia@sjofartsverket.se.
