Umeå Port plays a crucial role in Umeå’s position as a logistics hub in northern Scandinavia, offering opportunities for climate-smart transportation. The port has a vast geographical catchment area, including parts of both Norway and Finland, and serves as a key logistics node for the region’s business sector.

Other Projects in the Port

Several construction and development projects are ongoing in the port to accommodate future cargo volumes and support the maritime sector's transition. The Nordporten construction project includes multiple subprojects and spans several years, meaning that construction in the inner port will take place simultaneously with the fairway project.

Scope

The planned improvements to the fairway include widening and deepening the general fairway through dredging, as well as upgrading fairway markings in the general fairways 730, 731, and 733, along with the affected port area. The planned expansion of the storage area in the port involves land reclamation in Foderviken on the western side of the port and the area south of the Coast Guard station on the eastern side of the port.

The designated vessel size for the fairway is approximately 245 meters in length, 35 meters in width, and a draft of 11.0 meters, with no restrictions for nighttime navigation. The fairway's depth dimensioning will be based on the Swedish Transport Agency’s required safety margin of 0.7 meters under the keel under specified conditions.

Timeline

The project is divided into three phases: investigation, preparation for construction, and implementation.

Fairway investigation: 2022-2026. This phase includes project planning and permit applications.
Preparation for construction: 2027. This phase includes the procurement of contractors.
Implementation: Construction will begin in 2028 and is expected to be completed within the same year.
