The Swedish Maritime Administration plans measures to improve maritime safety in fairway 271 to the Port of Karlskrona.

Karlskrona Fairway

The fairway to the Port of Karlskrona does not meet the desired standards for today's maritime traffic in terms of safety margins and accessibility. In poor weather and low visibility conditions, there is an increased risk of grounding and collision. Furthermore, encounters between larger vessels are not possible along the relevant section of the fairway.

The need for safety-enhancing measures has gradually increased due to the growing size of vessels using the fairway and the increased frequency of scheduled ferry traffic. To improve safety, the fairway needs to be widened and deepened to a minimum depth of 12.0 meters in one area and 12.5 meters in a smaller section.

Safety-Enhancing Measures

The Swedish Maritime Administration is therefore planning the following safety-enhancing measures:

  • Dredging and some blasting in and adjacent to the fairway south of the strait between Aspö and Tjurkö, within two areas with a combined seabed surface of approximately 76,000 square meters.

  • Construction of two new fixed navigation marks.

The planned dredging is expected to take approximately four months, while the work on navigation marks will be carried out separately over four to six weeks.

Permit Process

For these measures, the Swedish Maritime Administration will apply for a permit from the Land and Environment Court. The process includes conducting consultations and preparing an environmental impact assessment. This assessment will describe the environmental consequences of the project and propose protective measures.
